About the Role:
The Horticulture Manager will be responsible for managing and growing our Help Nurseries, and enabling appropriate practical activity for people with disabilities through the horticulture operations. Our Help Nurseries are commercial businesses of Help Enterprises, a community-based social enterprise whose mission is to enhance the lifestyle and independence of people who live with disability. Our wholesale nursery business supplies high quality plants to the landscaping industry. We provide a unique, supported workplace environment for many of our employees who live with disability. You will be the face of the Nursery delivering our product to our customers in a timely manner. You will also spend time within the Nursery between deliveries, working alongside our supported employees.
Reporting to the Head of Commercial, you will:
- Manage the day to day activities of the horticulture services and nursery team
- Ensure that the participants involved in the horticulture activity are appropriately supervised and undertaking work which is relevant to their goals and the divisions’ goal
- Maximise the returns on the division’s capital investments, in particular it’s investments in people, intellectual property and plant and equipment
- Ensure that all needs of employees are met, in particular as it relates to creating opportunities for people with disabilities
- Take responsibility for the continuous improvement of the division’s Quality Assurance (QA) policies, procedures and compliance, including health and safety requirements
- Liaise with customers to source new sales/contracts that are appropriate for the division’s production capabilities
- Quote on new orders/contracts in a timely fashion
- Develop Help Enterprises brand recognition – promote the organisation as well as the products
- Obtain regular customer feedback on quality of stock and service
- Attend promotional trade days and organise product displays when appropriate and practical
- Analyse productivity of supported employees against sales to determine suitability of products and training needs
- Compile and manage annual budget
- Ensure business development activities are in accordance with strategic goals.
- Create and implement production schedule in line with projected sales and propagation schedule
- Determine spraying/pruning/fertilising/watering requirements and ensure all cultural practices are administered in a safe and efficient manner
- Maintain adequate levels of raw materials and resources to meet production requirements Approve maintenance of equipment as required
- Ensure staffing levels are consistent with the division’s objectives.
- Identify staff training needs and organise or provide training as required
- Run monthly staff meetings with employees to ensure accurate and adequate flow of information/high level of morale/ownership within division
- Ensure that each employee is aware of the importance of the contribution they make to the team and to the overall success of Help Enterprises
This role is a Full-Time role based in Mitchelton
About You:
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Experience in Nursery/Horticultural management
- Relevant plant, pest and disease management knowledge
- Current OH&S knowledge
- High level organisational skills
- Experience in quoting / tenders with demonstrated sales success within the horticulture industry
- High level understanding of industry standards in terms of product quality and use
- Formal qualifications in Horticulture (desirable)
